What is Microsoft Fabric?

MYTH: Fabric is just Power BI.

BUSTED: Microsoft Fabric is a Swiss Army knife for data – a collection of tools bundled together, and you only need to use the ones relevant to you.

Microsoft Fabric is an all-in-one, cloud-based data platform. It covers the whole data lifecycle, from storage to dashboards. And it’s offered as a SaaS (Software as a Service) product which makes it easy to deploy.

At its core, Fabric gives you one home for all your data, in whatever format it arrives. From there, you can turn the data into reports, drop dashboards straight into Microsoft 365, and even layer in advanced analytics and AI as needed.

Yes, it looks complex at first glance. But after a little digging you’ll see that key features like Copilot and AI being built in, means that any user can ask questions about the data, get help to understand what they’re looking at, and automate what they’re doing. And all this is backed by Microsoft’s governance and compliance capabilities.

Okay, that still sounds like a lot.

So, how does this apply to you?

Where should I start with Microsoft Fabric?

MYTH: You need a degree in data analytics to use Fabric.

BUSTED: If you can spin up services in Azure, migrate databases, or build a Power BI dashboard, you can already fulfil most clients’ early Microsoft Fabric projects.

With those skills, what can I offer my customers today?

Fabric integrates seamlessly with Azure and Power BI – tools you already know. So, you already have the skills to fulfil most client requests: updating licenses, migrating data, and creating dashboards in Fabric.

For example, you could:

  • Help customers move from Power BI premium capacity to Fabric licensing.
  • Advise customers on licensing using Microsoft’s pricing calculators.
  • Support customers migrating data to the cloud in Fabric.
  • Create and publish Power BI visualisations, reports, and dashboards.

See! No degree required.

Ask your clients about their data strategy and you might be surprised how simple it is to recommend Fabric. Then voilà! A new revenue stream.

Now, you can prompt your clients to check out and offer these services to them.

What should I do next?

MYTH: It’s all too complicated, I have no idea what to do next!

BUSTED: If you’re eager to expand, you can grow alongside the clients who are adopting Fabric.

That could look like supporting customers with creating real-time reporting, governing and securing their data, or eventually stepping into data science, machine learning, and AI.

Whenever you are ready to, you can create these new revenue opportunities by adding the relevant skills to your team.

But for now, there’s plenty you can already do!

Why start offering Microsoft Fabric services now?

MYTH: Customers are not ready for data solutions.

BUSTED: Fabric is gaining traction fast and is one of the fastest growing products that Microsoft offers, so you don’t want to get left behind.

Every customer creates data so customers may soon be asking you about it (if they are not already) and you don’t want to leave money on the table, especially now you know how to fulfil early Fabric use-cases.

Get a foot in the door with clients who are adopting the tool, then you’ll be in prime position to offer new revenue streams as your clients’ needs grow.

Take the next step

MYTH: For those new to Microsoft Fabric, there is no clear starting point.
